Creating a living memorial inside of Fortnite
With more than 100 years having passed since the end of the First World War, the significance of Remembrance Day and the importance of honouring Veterans has become unclear to many younger Canadians. The Royal Canadian Legion consistently seeks to find new and meaningful ways to educate younger Canadians about Canada’s military history. “Remembrance Island”, the creation of a living memorial inside of the popular video game Fortnite, was one of those ways. “Remembrance Island II” tells even more of Canada’s military history.
Reaching and teaching young people about Canada’s military history
The Royal Canadian Legion’s goal to reach and teach young people directly within the Fortnite platform offers gamers the ability to learn about the contributions made by Canadian military through recreations of First World War trenches, D-Day beaches, shelled European towns as well as the well-known Vimy Ridge memorial and more.
Saluting our troops
To meet gamers on their own terms, we ask players to meet at our Vimy Ridge memorial at 11pm to conduct a moment of silence on November 11th. The gamers didn’t disappoint in the past, showing up in the tens of thousands to pay their respects, and then sharing them doing so on social media.
Following the trail of Poppies
“Remembrance Island II” asks gamers to follow a trail of Poppies through 10 unique environments and over 35 different museum like plaques which explain how brave Canadians sacrificed their own lives to save ours.

“Serving those who served means finding every available channel to tell their story.”
